Screen printing has been around for thousands of years, but it was Andy Warhol who helped push it into the limelight in North America. He took the stencilling technique to a whole new level when he started working with it in the early 1960’s. He created some very famous pieces including images of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Elizabeth Taylor as well as a series of screen prints called Death and Disaster.
Just yesterday, one of Andy Warhol’s Elvis Presley prints went up for sale in a NY auction and sold for $37 million. You think that sounds like a lot of money? In 2007, Green Car Crash — Green Burning Car I from his Death and Disaster series sold for $71 million.
And you thought screen printed t-shirts were expensive!
